One of the biggest problems
I see when people first start using echolink is setting the audio levels. I am going to try to walk you thru this process as quick and easy as posible.

Most people think if you have alot of audio or loud audio it will sound better...
Actually the stations that sound the best like true natural radio audio are the ones with just a little gain and are not over modulated over the Echolink system.

Start small hardly no audio at all and work slowly up to just a little audio. Then slowly tune it up until you have great audio! Making sure you have clean nice audio that everyone will enjoy!

If your not getting compliments on your audio something is'nt right. There are so many bad sounding links out there.. When you run into a great sounding one .. People notice right away...

Adjusting your Audio

Check that you Windows Sound Recorder or wave recorder is operating correctly. You can find this under Programs/Accessories/Entertainment or Multimedia.. If you cant find it you might need to install if from your windows cd.

First we want to look at you audio on the wave recorder... Making sure you have levels set correctly and you can hear the audio working on your pc...

we do this by pressing the record button. This is the red round button on the sound recorder... You will then be recording audio from your mic... Then listen to your self by playing it back by hitting the play triangle button and get ready to set your audio level mixer...

WAVE OR SOUND RECORDER THIS IS THE WINDOWS SOUND RECORDER OR WAVE RECORDER

Open the Audio mixer. This can be done by double clicking the small speaker in the System Tray (bottom right of screen).

When you have done this another windows will pop up. This is your pc sound mixer board....

BUTTON BUTTON WHO HAS GOT THE BUTTON

OK NOW YOU CAN SEE ALL THE SCREENS

1. you know how to get to your sound recorder to test your audio and mic and set your levels on your pc mixer board.. Whats left... Thats easy...

You must experiment and try differnt things and ask questions... Ask other echolink users how do i sound now?

Grab a person and test it over the local rf link and say do i sound natural?

Your goal is to slip onto a repeater as a echolink station sounding like just another 2 meter station.

Other things to know...

The 20db agc gain or boost could help you or hurt you make sure you know if its on or off or if you even have one?.. It may be under advanced controls..

If your sound card has the microphone displayed on the Playback or Master Out Control Panel these should be muted as you will hear yourself through your speakers when talking. The microphone should only be selected or un-muted in the Recording Control.

With the Playback or Master Out Control Panel if you have "WAV" and or "DIGITAL" sliders these also control the audio heard.

For clearer audio reduce the wav and digital sliders and increase the master out slider.

Every computer is a little differnt there is no one setting that will work for everyone all i can do is show you where to adjust your audio levels at and you have to find what works for you.. Good luck and God Bless..

If you get stuck throw me an e-mail or try to call me on the node if you do have audio at all?
